Walking and Swimming Down South

Brockwellites went walking and swimming again, this time to the South Downs on a perfectly sunny day Saturday 23rd July.

Starting at Brixton Tube early in the morning we picked up folk along the way and headed for our first splash at Pells Pool in Lewes, just East of Brighton. Claiming to be “the oldest documented freshwater outdoor public swimming pool in the United Kingdom” it proved a sheer delight. The 50 yard pool was crystal clear and not too busy when we arrived at 10:30am.

Reluctantly leaving this idyllic oasis we headed for Kingston near Lewes to start our walk along the South Downs Way. A bit of a climb to get to the top of the hill, but incredible views when we got there, and a lovely spot for a picnic lunch and quick General Meeting.

Then onwards toward the sea, passing some very friendly cows, ancient Tumuli, swaying fields of golden corn, banks of  bright red poppies, and more amazing views. As the sea mist started to roll over we could tell we were nearing the coast. This also gave us some cooling shelter from the afternoon’s strong sun.

The sparkling blue English Channel finally in sight, we headed down the coastal path and into Saltdean for another swim. Quickly changing we were soon hobbling down the pebbles and cooing with delight as our sore feet recovered in the 20°C salt water. It was also great to meet local swimmer Caroline who encouraged some of us to swim out to the marker buoy and back. The conditions were so sublime it seemed no effort at all.

Our original schedule was now blown, so we skipped the Brighton swim and headed straight for the station passing the old Saltdean Lido on the way. A great day out, all rather tired but huge grins our our faces.
