On Saturday 16th August, Brockwell Swimmers gathered at the Lido for our annual Channel Challenge, a club tradition where members combine their efforts to cover the same distance as the English Channel. Nineteen swimmers took part this year, working together to swim a total of 20.5 miles, the equivalent of 676 lengths or 338 laps of the Lido. It’s a challenge that demands both stamina and teamwork, and once again the club rose to the occasion.
What made this year’s event even more special was the way we didn’t just stop once the Channel distance had been completed. With swimmers still going strong, we pushed on to set a new club record. Last year we managed an impressive 800 lengths, but this time we reached a remarkable 828 lengths (that’s 414 laps). It was a fantastic collective achievement, and a real testament to the commitment and energy of everyone who got into the water on the day.
Beyond the numbers, the Channel Challenge is about more than just distance. It’s a chance for the club to come together, encourage each other, and swim for a good cause. This year, the event is raising money for the RNLI, whose volunteers save lives at sea and help keep swimmers, sailors, and coastal communities safe. Donations are still open on our JustGiving page. Thank you to everyone who has taken part, supported, and donated, together, we’ve shown just what Brockwell Swimmers can achieve as a team.
