On Saturday 25th July, ten Brockwell Swimmers enjoyed another of our popular Swim/Walk adventures, this time following the Windsor and Eton Circular from the excellent WildSwimming Walks – Thames & West guide published by Wild Things Publishing. After catching the 09:08 train from Paddington to Windsor & Eton Central, we set off on the 8.5-mile circular route, carrying packed lunches, swimming kit and plenty of enthusiasm. The route explores one of the Thames’ most historic stretches, passing through Windsor and Eton before circling the island created by the River Thames and the Jubilee River. Although only a short distance from Slough, the walk quickly escapes into surprisingly peaceful countryside of open fields, broad waterways and quiet riverside paths.
The morning took us past two of England’s most famous landmarks. Windsor Castle, the longest continually occupied royal residence in Europe, dominates the skyline with nearly a thousand years of history, while across the river Eton is defined by its world-famous college, founded by Henry VI in 1440. Along the way we learnt about the area’s fascinating heritage, from medieval streets and hidden waterways to the modern Jubilee River, completed in 2002 as a flood relief channel. Despite the rich history, it was the tranquil riverside scenery that made the biggest impression, offering a wonderful contrast to the bustle of nearby towns.
No Brockwell Swim/Walk would be complete without a couple of dips, and this outing certainly didn’t disappoint. Our first swim was in the clear waters of the Jubilee River before we later enjoyed a second swim in the River Thames itself. We stopped at the picturesque village green in Dorney for a relaxed picnic lunch before visiting the beautifully quaint Boveney Church, a tiny medieval church best known for appearing in the film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. The combination of swimming, walking, history and glorious summer weather made for a perfect day out.
After completing the circuit, there was just enough time for a well-earned visit to the Duke of Connaught, where a few refreshing ales rounded off another memorable Brockwell Swimmers adventure before catching the 17:40 train back to Paddington. With great company, two excellent swims, beautiful countryside and plenty of fascinating history along the way, the Windsor and Eton Circular proved to be another outstanding Swim/Walk.
